Frequently Asked Questions

What is Nuj and how does it work?

Nuj is an alarm clock that charges you real money if you don't get up on time — and donates it to charity.

You set an alarm time and a get-up time, add barcodes (like your toothpaste), and set a penalty. If you don't scan a barcode by your get-up time, the penalty is charged and goes to charity.

How much does Nuj cost?

Nuj is free to start. Every user gets 5 free penalty alarms per month. For unlimited penalty alarms, a subscription is $5/month or $50/year.

For Canadian users, the price is $7 CAD/month or $70 CAD/year (including HST).

What happens when I use up my 5 free penalty alarms?

Your alarms keep working normally — they just won't carry a money penalty until your free penalty alarms reset the next month.

What does a subscription include?

A subscription includes unlimited penalty alarms, access to the full list of charities (a small set of charities is available to everyone for free), and the ability to request a new charity.

How do I cancel my subscription?

In the app, go to the Settings tab > Tap on Payments > Under Subscription, tap Cancel > Answer a few quick questions > Tap Yes, Cancel. Your subscription stays active until the end of your current billing period, then you drop to the free plan.

If you need any help, reach out to [email protected].

Where does my penalty money go?

Every penalty is donated to charity. The default is GiveDirectly.

You can find Nuj on:

Does Nuj keep any of the penalty money?

No. Nuj donates 100% of penalties minus payment-processing fees (charged by Stripe, not kept by Nuj).

When are donations made?

Donations are made once a year, around Giving Tuesday, as a lump sum to each charity. This minimizes processing fees and takes advantage of seasonal matching programs, so the donation makes a bigger impact.

Can I cheat by turning off my phone?

No. Turning off your phone won't stop the penalty — alarms are stored in the cloud, so you still need to scan a barcode by your get-up time. Alarms also lock before they go off, so they can't be disabled at the last minute.
